State dignitary Abdulla Hameed

The body of state dignitary Abdulla Hameed has been brought to Malé this morning.

Abdulla Hameed passed away on Tuesday in Bangalore, India.

People can pay their last respects from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the funeral prayer has been scheduled for after Isha prayer at Islamic Centre today.

Abdulla Hameed was the older half-brother of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, and the younger brother of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

He began his employment in the government on 28 May 1952, serving longest in the atolls administration department. He has served as Deputy Minister of Provincial Affairs, Minister of Provincial Affairs, Minister of Atolls Administration, and Minister of Atolls Development.

Abdulla Hameed also served as Speaker of the Parliament, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, and Member of Parliament appointed by the President.

Other posts he took on include Minister of Education and Minister of State for Cultural Affairs. Later on, Abdulla Hameed was appointed as Senior Minister at the President’s Office.

Abdulla Hameed was conferred the Order of Distinguished Rule of Izzuddeen by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
