PG decides against prosecuting Ali Waheed

The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office has decided not to file charges against Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed, and returned the case to the police.

Police, in the case sent to PG Office, accused Ali Waheed of inciting violence in his speech at a protest on 1 May 2015.

PG Office spokesperson told Sun Online that the case was returned because police had not submitted sufficient evidence to build a case against Ali Waheed.

In addition to Ali Waheed, President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdulla, Deputy Leader of Jumhooree Party Ameen Ibrahim, and JP member Sobah Rasheed have also been accused of terrorism following the protest on 1 May.

Ali Waheed, Ameen Ibrahim, and Sobar Rasheed are presently in the UK.
