Maldives to host environment forum, 33 countries to participate

Maldives is to host a large environment protection forum, with delegates from 33 countries set to participate in the event.

Set to be held from August 16 to 19 in the capital, Male’, Maldives will be hosting the 6th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and Pacific – a forum focused on providing strategic policy advice to government authorities in mainstreaming 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) into overall policy, planning and development.

Maldivian Environment Minister Toriq Ibrahim launched the forum in a ceremony held in “Seneko Maalam” of national radio station – Dhivehirajjege Adu on Thursday.

Speaking during the ceremony held to launch the forum, Minister Toriq said that a total of 141 delegates from governments will be participating in the forum, which includes ministers, four state ministers, a mayor, and a governor.

Those set to participate in the forum also includes 111 representatives from organizations, bringing the number of total participants to 250.

Regional 3R Forum is organized by United Nations Center for Regional Development (UNCRD) and the government of Japan.

Minister said that government had decided to mark August 16 as National 3R Day, to celebrate the forum being held in the country.

“…Important events that will take place on that day include promoting the principles on 3R and signing a declaration with resorts to encourage environment friendly methods of waste management,” said Minister Toriq.

He said that the forum would be very beneficial to Maldives, which includes discussions between Maldivian government and important delegates that will be visiting the country.

Public Service Media (PSM) was assigned media partner of the forum. The agreement was signed during the ceremony.
