As the new Penal Code comes into effect starting midnight tonight, Maldives Police Service has said that they are ready to follow it.
Speaking at the press conference at Iskandharu Koshi today, Chief Inspector Hassan Shifaau said that a told 3100 officers including the civil servants has been trained to follow the new Penal Code.
He said that 528 officers were trained at the original implementation date of 13 April.
In Malé City, 45 training programs were conducted to train officers to the new Penal Code while 25 programs were held in the atolls.
Inspector Shifaau said that 190 officers remain that needs to be trained for the new Penal Code and 108 of them are in the atolls.
He said that six training programs were held in this Ramadan as well and a refreshing program for the officers would be moving forward.
According to the new Penal Code, if charges are not pressed within three years from the crime, the charges cannot be pursued afterwards in some cases. And in some cases, the charges cannot be pursued after eight years.
As the new Penal Code comes into effect, Inspector Shifaau said that there are 100-200 cases that are three years old and those cases would be filed. And the filing process would be transparent and after checking thoroughly.
