MDP-Government discussion meeting scheduled for tonight has been cancelled

Official talks between the government and the opposition MDP scheduled for tonight has been cancelled.

Spokesperson of the President’s Office, Ibrahim Muaz Ali tweeted today saying that the third meeting of the MDP-Government talks scheduled for tonight was cancelled because some of the officials are out of town.

Spokesperson Muaz told Sun Media tonight that those out of town are Government officials.

The Government and the MDP has held two meetings so far as part of the official talks between the two.

At the latest meeting, Government official in the talks, Home Minister Umar Naseer said that although some of the things presented by MDP were asked to be completed in a specific timeframe, both parties at the meeting has agreed to move forward without a timeline.

A table to instigate political stability and what MDP is offering for the Government were scheduled on the agenda for tonight’s meeting.

Pointes presented by MDP:

- Leniency for some political figures serving time.

- Leniency for political figures charged following political activities.

- Leniency for people under investigation following political activities.

- A solution for the troubles faced by business owners.

- A solution for the troubles faced by Councilors, Civil Servants and Government employees.

- An independent investigation of the murder of Dr. Afrasheem.

- An independent investigation of the missing journalist, Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla.

- An independent investigation of threatening text messages to journalists and political figures.

The President Abdulla Yamin Abdul Gayoom has assigned the Home Minister, Umar Naseer to lead the official talks with MDP. Fisheries Minister, Dr. Mohamed Shainee and the Minister of the President’s Office, Abdulla Ameen are also taking part in the talks with MDP.
