Contract signed for purchase of landing craft for waste management in northern atolls

The government has signed a contract with India's Vijai Marine Services to acquire a landing craft for waste management efforts in the north.

The contract was signed today at a ceremony at the Ministry of Environment and Energy; by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim on behalf of the government, and Managing Director Jairam Dialani on behalf of Vijai Marine Services.

The landing craft measures 30 metres in length and will have a capacity of 200 tons. The cost is $645,000 (MVR 9.94 million).

Work is ongoing, meanwhile, to establish a Regional Waste Management Centre in Raa Vaandhoo. Thorig said that the landing craft will be used to transport waste from inhabited islands, industrial islands, and resorts in Raa, Baa, and Lhaviyani atolls; to Vaandhoo.

Speaking at the ceremony, Jairam Dialani assured that the landing craft will arrive in the Maldives within five months as stated in the contract.

The waste management project in the north is funded by the World Bank.

A contract was also signed today to develop the Waste Management Centre in Baa Maalhos.

This contract was signed with a local company, Thashisha Private Limited; by Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim on behalf of the government, and Director Hussain Shifan on behalf of Thashisha Private Limited.

The cost of the project, to be completed within three months, is MVR 591,139.
