The copy of the pen used to sign the Declaration of Independence has been released

The copy of the pen used by the Prime Minister at the time, Ibrahim Nasir to sign on the Declaration of Independence has been released.

At a ceremony held at Mookai Suites today, the pen was released by Abdul-Sattar Moosa Didi, the one who received the original pen and served the country for a long time and the honorable Leader of the Order of Nishan Izzuddeen.

On the day the Maldives was liberated from British rule, on 26 July 1965, Abdul-Sattar Moosa Didi was given the pen used to sign the declaration by the Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir as a gift.

The event organizers say that this pen released as part of the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Maldivian Independence would be available at Novelty Bookshop.

The pen is being sold for MVR 250.

Speaking at the ceremony today, the former CEO of TVM, Ali Khalid said that the difference between the original pen and the copy released today is that where the original pen says “Parker” the copy would say “50 years.”

He said that since Parker cannot be used, they decided to use 50 years. And he said that the company that made the original pen has taken “Parker” hence it cannot be used.

“Parker is a French group, in this region, it’s India. When we talked to them they said that this mold has been withdrawn from production so they can’t make an original pen.” Ali Khalid said.

The former TVM CEO said that as the country is celebrating 50 years of Independence, it is his joy to bring this pen to the people.

The Home Minister Umar Naseer also spoke at the ceremony today said that the pen was not only used to sign the declaration of Maldivian independence.

Home Minister said that the pen was used to sign the honorary guest book by Queen Elizabeth on her visit to the Maldives. And the former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Bandaranaike also used the same pen to sign the honorary guest book on her visit.

Speaking at the ceremony, Abdul-Sattar Moosa Didi said that after signing the declaration, Prime Minister Ibrahim Nasir came to his residence and gave the pen to him.

“I believe Ibrahim Nasir gave it to me as a gift. That is a pen Ibrahim Nasir used personally.” Abdul-Sattar Moosa Didi said.
