Attorney General Mohamed Anil has said that the Decentralisation Act is being revised and some powers of City Council are being revoked and handed over to the government, for the benefit of the people.
Anil made this remark while speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate the Traveller’s Market on Wednesday evening.
He said that the purpose of the amendments is to provide public services to the people, and the government’s focus is to make things easier for all citizens.
He further noted that the government gave Malé City Council the chance to solve the problems faced by the people of Malé, such as flooding, waste management, and maintaining roads, but none of these things were done.
Malé City Council had all resources including staff and funds but still failed to meet any of these demands, prompting the government to take necessary action within the boundaries of the law, said Anil.
He said that the transformation of the local market into a clean, well-maintained place, shows the dedication of the current government.
