Two suspected murders in one week, no arrests

Police have said that no one has been arrested in relation to the two suspected murders reported within six days over the past week.

A foreign national was found dead with injuries in a house in Laamu Gan on 11 June, and Hussain Shiyar, 19, died after being assaulted on 15 May in Hithadhoo, Addu City.

The body of the Bangladeshi man was discovered at 7:10 a.m. on Thursday, in the house in Gan where he lived alone as a caretaker.

Shiyar died while receiving treatment in the ICU in Hithadhoo Hospital yesterday.

Hithadhoo Hospital spokesperson said that Shiyar had several stab wounds on his body and had suffered a serious head injury in the assault, and died as a result of those injuries at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses say he was attacked while at home by a group of masked men.

In addition to these two, four suspected murders have taken place so far this year in the Maldives. They are the suspected murders of two-year-old Mohamed Ibthihaal in January, Jailam Ahmed Shakir in February, and Ali Ziyadam and Bangladeshi man Shaheen in March.
