Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Gasim Ibrahim has asked MPs of JP to support the amendment to the Political Parties Act restricting the age for running for president to between 30 and 65.
If the bill is passed by the parliament and ratified by the president, Gasim would be above 65 and would not be able to run for president at the next election.
JP Spokesperson Ali Solih told Sun Online that Gasim called and sent text messages to MPs of JP, to make this request.
Presently, there is no upper limit in terms of age for running for president. Article 109 of the Constitution states that a person elected as president shall be at least of 35 years of age.
