Muheeth murder case hearings concluded

The hearings of the case regarding the murder of Abdul Muheeth, G. Veyru, Male’, have been completed.

The state brought charges against Muhjath Ahmed Nasih, Gaafu Dhaalu Gadhdhoo; Ali Mushaffau, Seenu Maradhoo; and Mohamed Maimoon, Lhaviyani Naifaru; following Muheeth’s murder.

Muhjath and Mushaffau have been charged with murder, while Maimoon has been charged with accessory to murder.

Presenting the concluding remarks at the hearing today, the State Prosecutor said that the witness statements and other evidence provided by the State were sufficient to prove the charges against the three suspects.

Ali Shah, Defence lawyer representing Muhjath and Mushaffau, meanwhile, said that the witness testimonies provided by the State were unacceptable.

Similarly, Maimoon’s lawyer also said that the charges against Maimoon cannot be proved based on the evidence provided by the State. To that effect, he said that it was not clear if the anonymous witness provided by the State was a man, woman, or child.

Judge Muhthaz Fahmy said that the verdict will be delivered at the next hearing, which will be scheduled after review of relevant documents.

Muheeth died at 1:50 a.m. on 19 February 2012, after being stabbed in a blind alley in Male’. He was sitting on a motorcycle at the time of the attack.

Two minors have already been convicted of Muheeth’s murder, and sentenced to death by the Juvenile Court. The sentence has been appealed in High Court.
