President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has formed a committee to administer the conferring of the Award for Special Achievement, and met with the members today.
The committee was formed following a decision by the cabinet on 24 April, to create a technical committee to administer the special awards given to those who achieve distinction for the country by the President.
Members of the technical committee are, Dr Hassan Hameed of Medilia; Dr Abdul Muhsin Mohamed of H. Sandharoasge; Dr Ahmed Anwar of M. Bluestone; Dr Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa of M. Dhaashin; and Ms Aminath Reena of H. Kandoomaage.
Meeting the members of the committee, the President said that the resumption of conferring the award would be a way for the government to recognise individuals who achieve distinction for the country, and that this would be also encourage higher education. The President expressed confidence that the committee members were competent to carry out the task at hand, and asked them to revise the existing selection criteria set for conferring the awards, and to make the necessary amendments.
The award was first given during President Gayoom’s presidency in 1985. The award had been given each year since then, till 2007.
