Elections Commission President Fuad Thaufeeg has said that they will make a decision on the removal of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Dr Ibrahim Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy from their posts through a no-confidence vote at an emergency meeting by MDP National Congress.
Fuad said that the Commission was in the process of checking if they were removed according to the party’s basic regulations, when Didi submitted the case to the commission, following which they are now looking into it even more extensively. They are working on obtaining the necessary documents from MDP to present at the commission’s meeting tomorrow.
Referring to the case submitted to the commission by Dr Didi which indicated that they were removed against the party’s basic regulations, Fuad said that MDP had revised their basic regulations which were registered with the commission, and that MDP had not submitted the necessary documents to the commission following these revisions.
“The commission will announce its official decision on Dr Didi’s case as well as MDP’s decision after tomorrow’s meeting. We have not received some documents relating to the basic regulations. MDP did not submit several documents after making changes to the basic regulations at the most recent congress. We are facing huge problems due to failure to submit the papers required by existing regulations. We are looking into it,” Fuad said.
Civil Court had ruled that Reeko Moosa Manik, who chaired the MDP National Congress meeting held to remove the party President and Vice President from their posts, has no legal authority within MDP. The commission had also not received the records of the meeting held to appoint him as MDP Interim Chairperson.
“MDP had informed that the Interim Chairperson Reeko Moosa Manik will be in charge of the party’s administrative duties. However we have not received any documents regarding this meeting. So we are trying to obtain them,” Fuad said.
Dr Didi had submitted a case to Elections Commission indicating that he and Alhan Fahmy were removed from MDP leadership against the party’s basic regulations. Meanwhile, Alhan is preparing to file the same case to Civil Court.
