Protest pick-up truck driver to face terrorism charge

The State has pressed terrorism charges against the pick-up truck driver who broke through police lines during the protest in Malé on 1 May.

Prosecutor General’s Office Spokesperson Ahmed Hisham Wajeeh confirmed to Sun Online that the case was submitted to the court today.

The suspect, Basith Ibrahim, is a member of the biggest opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Basith drove his pick-up truck at high speed up to the Republic Square, after breaking through police lines in front of the Fish Market blocking protesters from entering Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) building area.
