Alhan and Dr. Didi have forgotten who they are: MDP Parliamentarian

Ahmed Sameer, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentarian representing Dhidhdhoo Constituency in the Majlis, has said that Dr. Ibrahim Didi and Alhan Fahmy, former President and Deputy President of MDP respectively, “have forgotten who they really are”.

Dr. Didi and Alhan were voted out of their office by the MDP National Council a few days ago, after a no-confidence vote against them. They had met with opposition from the National Council and party members loyal to the recently-resigned president Mohammed Nasheed. Dr. Didi and Alhan have, both before and after their removal from top elected positions in MDP, accused Nasheed of trying to control the Party in an undemocratic manner, and in ways that contravene the Party Constitution.

Sameer criticized Dr. Didi and Alhan in a speech he gave last night, in an MDP gathering held near the Maldives Monetary Authority building. Sameer said that the case that Alhan had filed at the Majlis, requesting for an investigation of the circumstances in which Nasheed had to resign from Presidency on the 7th of February this year, was filed against the rules of MDP Parliamentary Group.

“I would like to tell Alhan that I supported his bid for Deputy Presidency at the Party. Alhan should have known that when he comes to MDP, he would be shown the inside of the Party, and that when he starts making mistakes, he would be cast aside”, said Sameer.

Sameer defended the decision of the National Council of the Party, and said that as soon as MDP Leader Nasheed’s government fell from power on the 7th of February, the National Council decided not to acknowledge the new Government, and also decided to make Nasheed the highest authority in the Party. Sameer said that top leaders of the Party should abide by those decisions. “MDP’s Constitution says that the President of the Party and the Deputy President should follow the decisions made by the Party Organs”, said Sameer.

Sameer then said that if Dr. Didi and Alhan could not repeal the decisions of the Party’s National Council, they “should remain in their real size”, using a local slang that is considered highly degrading. Sameer also said that Dr. Didi and Alhan could not achieve anything by turning back and leaving the party either.
