Adhaalath Party (AP) has said that it welcomes the government’s invitation to engage in dialogue, but this would be possible only after AP President Imran Abdulla is released.
AP referred to President Abdulla Yameen’s request for the opposition and the government to hold discussions to solve issues, and said that the government should facilitate this by releasing those arrested during the protest on 1 May.
AP said in a press statement issued last night that Imran, being the President of the party, would be the one to represent the party in discussions with the government or any other body.
Yesterday, President Yameen reiterated his call on opposition groups to engage in discussions with the government, to ensure peace and order in the country.
Imran, Deputy Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Ameen Ibrahim, and Chairman of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed were arrested during a mass rally on 1 May, for inciting violence.
Criminal Court had remanded them in custody for 15 days. The remand periods had been appealed in High Court, which yesterday released Ameen and upheld Criminal Court’s remand periods for Imran and Ali Waheed.
