Pakistan to provide $ 2 m for repair of parliament building

Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Maseeh Mohamed has said that the Pakistani government would donate $2 million to repair the parliament building.

Speaking to the press after the official visit to Pakistan, the Parliament Speaker said that the building was in dire need of repair, and the Pakistani government had agreed to provide $2 million as requested by the Maldivian government.

He said that the total cost of the project has been estimated by consultants, after creating a proposal and itemising costs, at $2 million.

Minister at the President’s Office Mohamed Hussain Shareef, who also accompanied President Yameen on the state visit to Pakistan, said that work related to the repair of the parliament has been ongoing for some time, initiated by President Yameen and Parliament Speaker Maseeh.

He said that the first request in this regard was made from Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Shareef during the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit.

The parliament building was constructed by the Pakistani government about 17 years ago.
