The Islamic University Bill has been ratified by President Abdulla Yameen.
The bill, submitted on behalf of the government by Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla, defines the Islamic University as an independent institution with legal entity status.
It states that once the Act comes into effect, Kulliyyathul Dhiraasathul Islamiyya (Kulliyya) will be upgraded to a university.
The council of Kulliyya will become the council of the university, and the President of the Council of Kulliyya will act as the chancellor of the university until a new chancellor is appointed, states the new Islamic University Act.
The government said earlier that the Maldives is a Muslim country where the main source of the Constitution is Islam, it is therefore imperative to establish a law detailing the purpose, procedures and responsibilities of such an educational institution, which will help strengthen the country’s Islamic character.
