Committee rejects motion on hike in electricity prices

The Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government has rejected a motion submitted by three MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), regarding the recent increase in electricity prices for businesses in Addu City.

The motion was rejected with five votes by pro-government MPs, while three MPs of MDP and one MP of Jumhooree Party (JP) voted in favour.

Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) member Mohamed Ismail told Sun Online that the Oversight Committee rejected the motion because the issue is already under investigation by the Public Accounts Committee.

Addu-Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam, one of the MPs involved in submitting the motion, said that the issue is more relevant to the Oversight Committee, as it is the responsibility of the Oversight Committee to hold the government accountable for its actions.

Protests have been held in many islands following the recent hike in electricity prices for businesses.
