MDP

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member and MP for Maradhoo constituency Ibrahim Shareef has called on the party to appeal former President Mohamed Nasheed’s case in a higher court, and do everything possible to free Nasheed from prison.

Speaking at the parliament today, Shareef said that MDP as well as many Maldivians were saddened by the fact that Nasheed remained in prison. He said that he believed that Nasheed could be saved, and highlighted the importance of filing an appeal case as there are two remaining stages.

Similar to other recent parliament sittings, several MPs of MDP gathered near the Speaker’s desk to protest against Nasheed’s arrest. Shareef, however, did not join them today and instead took part in the debate.

He urged MDP to engage in dialogue with the government instead of acting out in vengeance, envy and hatred, and also called on the government to do everything possible to ensure that Nasheed is released – in order to restore peace and order in the country.

Nasheed was convicted of terrorism and sentenced to 13 years in prison by Criminal Court. The case has not been appealed in any higher court.
