The government has banned feeding the birds at Republic Square in Malé.
An official of Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure told Sun Online that the purpose of this decision is to ensure cleanliness, and follows the government’s plans to make the area more attractive.
He added that as more people feed them, the number of birds and nests in the area are increasing.
As part of the efforts to make the area more attractive ahead of the Independence Day Golden Jubilee celebrations, the government has replaced the grass and announced plans to build a water fountain.
