HRCM: fire set to the man in custody is being investigated independently from the police

Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) have said that they are investigating the fire set on a man in police custody suspected for domestic abuse in Addu City independently from the Police.

Responding to the Police claims that they are working with the HRCM, the Secretary General of HCM, Shamoon Hameed said that the Human Rights Commission is and independent institute.

And so no one would be joining on the investigations conducted by the commission.

“While the HRCM is an independent institute, no outside party can take part in the investigations conducted by this commission.” Shamoon said.

He said that when the information about the works of the commission is to be shared, it would be shared by the HRCM.

The man who was set on fire is receiving treatment at the Hithadhoo Regional Hospital.
