Investigation begins after a fire on a man in police custody

Police Professional Standard Command and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives have started investigating a fire set on a man in police custody suspected for domestic abuse in Addu City.

A 28-year-old male was arrested regarding a domestic abuse case in Addu City Hithadhoo around 3:30 p.m. last Tuesday.

The Police extended the man’s custody period by ten days on Wednesday at the Hithadhoo Magistrate Court at 12:30 p.m.

Police said that after bringing him back to the Hithadhoo Police Station from court, the man was found with fire caught on the back of his shirt after the officers put him in a cell to process his arrest to a permanent arrest.

The man is currently admitted in Hithadhoo Regional Hospital and under treatment after the police put out the fire on him. Doctors say his condition is good.

While the Police Professional Standard Command is investigating the case, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has also started investigating.
