The MP for Addu-Meedhoo constituents, Rozaina Adam has said that electricity is a basic need to be provided by the government and it is not acceptable if it’s being treated as a business.
In the press conference held at the office of MDP today regarding the rise in prices of electricity in Addu, MP Rozaina said that electricity is a basic need and the government has decided to make it a profitable business.
“The powerhouses in Addu City are foreign aids. We condemn and raise concerns about the FENAKA taking over those powerhouses and saying that they made a profit of 11 million with the cancellation of subsidies.” Rozaina said.
She said that no subsidies were paid to the citizens of Addu City before.
“So saying that the bills got high when the subsidies were cancelled is not something we can believe. The bills have been raised without any cancelled subsidies.” Rozaina said.
While MP Rozaina raised concerns about electrical prices, the Director of FENAKA Corporation, Hussain Hameez said that no change has been brought to the price of electricity by this government.
He said that the current procedures were set by the government of President Nasheed. And without billing at the prices passed at the time, different island had different rates of subsidies and it has now been brought all to the same level.
