Will investigate if Didi and Alhan were removed from posts according to basic regulations: Fuad

President of Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeg has said that an investigation will be conducted to determine if Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Dr Ibrahim Didi and Vice President Alhan Fahmy were removed according to MDP basic regulations.

Fuad told Sun in an interview today that information regarding the removal of MDP President and VP was received after working hours yesterday, and that the Commission will take necessary action if this was done in conflict with MDP basic regulations. However, if this was in line with MDP basic regulations, nothing more can be done about it.

“I would have to discuss with Commission members and find out what is stated in MDP basic regulations. Whether they were removed according to these regulations can only be determined after that,” Fuad said

Fuad said that regulations on political parties obligate parties to inform the Commission within a certain period of time, of any removal or resignation of any person elected or appointed according to the party’s basic regulations.

He further said that no complaints had been received so far regarding the removal of Didi and Alhan. The normal practice for the Commission is to assess the issue after studying the meeting minutes, which should be submitted to the Commission, where the people were removed from their posts. However any complaints received prior to this will also be looked into by the Commission.

“Our principle is to conduct an assessment when we receive the meeting minutes. We check if the minutes are in line with the party’s basic regulations. However if, for example, Alhan or Didi submit a complaint to the Commission even before that, we will inquire the party and find out what happened,” Fuad said.

The emergency meeting of MDP National Congress was attended by 73 members, where votes of no-confidence were taken separately on Didi and Alhan following the issue being submitted to the Congress by Henveiru Dhekunu MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor.
