Minister of Education Dr Ahmed Asim has said that basic civic education elements will be included in the new curriculum.
Speaking at the ceremony to inaugurate the national conference on civic education yesterday, Asim said that the civic education campaign will take human dignity and peace in the country to new heights. He noted the importance of civic education to students, and said that several similar programs are ongoing:
“The new curriculum will include the basic elements of civic education. Even now, elements of civic education are included in various school activities.”
Asim expressed concern that not enough young people enrol themselves in higher education programs in Maldives, and said that reasons for this maybe that youth are unfamiliar with technical vocational training, and that they may not understand the value of vocational programs.
“The new civic education campaign will allow youth to familiarise themselves with vocational programs,” the Education Minister said.
He stressed that students, teachers, and parents are equally important in implementing the civic education program, and campaigns will be conducted with focus on different groups.
The civic education campaign was launched by President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik yesterday.
The main elements of the civic education program are to create a peaceful environment, protect human dignity, encourage communal activities, exercise the right to information, make the police more responsible, and make citizens more responsible.
