Remand extended for a fifth time for Afiya Mohamed

Criminal Court has extended the period of remand in custody for Afiya Mohamed, arrested on suspicion of abusing her son Mohamed Ibthihaal, who died as a result of the abuse.

The remand period was extended today for a fifth time, this time by fifteen days.

Ibthihaal was found dead in his home in Vaavu Rakeedhoo on 28 January 2015. Afiya had been advised on multiple occasions by the Island Council following suspected abuse.

She has confessed to physically abusing her son, and said that she did not intend to kill him.
