Adhaalath Party has announced its decision not to support the government, citing constitutional violations and abuse of public confidence by the government.
The decision was finalised at a meeting by the party leadership on Sunday night.
In a statement issued on Sunday night to the same effect, the party criticised the government and said that although it supported President Abdulla Yameen in the Presidential Election 2013 and helped him win the election, it has decided to withdraw its support because over the short period the government has been in power, the it has been engaged in high levels of corruption and activities which are not in line with the spirit of the constitution.
Adhaalath Party said that this move follows official and unofficial discussions with the government, which have failed to make any headway; and also confirmation that continuing to work with the government would not result in any reform.
Adhaalath Party’s news came shortly after the President’s Office announced that the President plans to share with the public details of the recent discussions between him and President of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdulla.
