President

The thumbs-down gesture by President Abdulla Yameen upon conclusion of his presentation of the Presidential Address in parliament today, was meant as advice to opposition groups to refrain from obstructing him in his presidential duties, his spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali has said.

Muaz said that the gesture was by no means meant to mock anyone.

He further said that the thumbs-up gesture by the President, on the other hand, showed his resolution in carrying out his duties as president.

The thumbs-up and thumbs-down gestures by the President this morning are being interpreted in various ways. Social media is rife with discussions, as opposition groups claim it showed disrespect to MPs and thereby citizens.
