Police has raised concerns regarding the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) issuing a press release without investigating the events that took place on the day former president Mohamed Nasheed was taken to Malé for his court hearing.
Speaking at a press conference at Iskandharu Koshi last night, Superintendent of Police, Hamdhoon Rasheed said that it is unacceptable to issue a press release straight away, blaming the police in the events that took place while taking President Nasheed to court last Monday.
“Constructive suggestions regarding police operations are things we acknowledge. But it’s unacceptable to blame us without an investigation,” Hamdhoon said.
Hamdhoon said that they have had a discussion with HRCM since the event.
He also said the Police Use of Force Review Committee is looking into the events of Monday.
Discrediting the claims that police have injured President Nasheed, Hamdhoon said that doctors have confirmed that the former president sustained no injuries.
Upon the request of President Nasheed and his lawyers, and X-ray ray of his shoulder was taken and the results did not show any injuries, Hamdhoon said.
Denying allegations of plans to harm president Nasheed while he is in police custody, Hamdhoon said the all actions are within the laws of human rights in the police treatment of the former president.
Regarding the ongoing MDP-JP protests, he advised to keep the demonstrations civil and within the law, and warned that police will take action if protesters act outside the law.
“We assure you, we will remain true to our oath to protect the citizens and keep the civil peace,” said the Superintendent of Police Hamdhoon Rasheed.
