Ibthihaal

The Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government has decided to assess the information submitted by four government institutions in relation to the death of three-year-old Mohamed Ibthihaal, due to suspected abuse, in Vaavu Rakeedhoo.

The committee meeting held today was closed for media.

Hoarafushi MP Mohamed Ismail said after the meeting that it was decided during the meeting, to assess the information submitted by the government institutions before the next meeting.

Chairperson of the Government Oversight Committee Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed told Sun Online last night that information had been submitted by all four institutions as requested by the committee.

The committee passed on 1 February 2015 to request Rakeedhoo Council, Ministry of Law and Gender, Family and Child Protection Unit, and Maldives Police Service to provide information relevant to Ibthihaal’s death.

Ibthihaal’s mother, Afiya Mohamed has been arrested on suspicion of abuse, and given 15 days of detention by the court.

Ibthihaal, who was found dead in his home on 28 January 2015, is the eldest of three of Afiya’s children.
