Malé City Council has decided today to take over the duties of providing a number of public services that had been provided by the Ministry of Economic Development. According to the Ministry, Malé City Council would start its new functions from the 10th of this month.

Malé City Council has already been providing services related to import licensing, licensing import of alcoholic drinks and pork products, licensing restaurants, canteens and tea shops, registration of movie rentals, trademarks, logos, theatre and business names, re-export licensing.

With the new mandates, the City Council would have the authority to settle disputes arising from trade license issue.

New services provided by the City Council would still be provided at the Ministry of Economic Development office at Velaanaage Building, although at a later date, the service base would also be relocated at Malé City Hall, where the City Council is housed.
