The case against former Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim involving four counts of fraud, for which he has been acquitted by Criminal Court, has been appealed in Supreme Court.
This has been confirmed to Sun Online by an official of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Criminal Court and High Court ruled earlier that the state did not have proper grounds for a case against Nazim.
Nazim has been accused of using staff of Namira Engineering Private Limited, in which he holds shares, to propose estimates in the name of non-existent companies for the purchase of 15,000 national flags by the Ministry of Atolls Administration. The second charge against him states that he used the staff of Namira to propose estimates in the name of another company, for the purchase of the 15,000 national flags.
He has also been accused of proposing bids under the names of different companies, without their knowledge, for the purchase of 220 harbour lights called for in 2003 by the Ministry of Atolls. Finally, has been charged with fraud for the purchase of sound systems for mosques in the islands, which was also supposedly carried out underhandedly.
