Police seize large quantities of alcohol from Hulhumale

The police have seized large quantities of alcohol from Hulhumale’.

Police said that alcohol bottles were found in a bag in the area to the south of the Immigration Department’s Detention Centre during an operation at the industrial area in Hulhumale’ on Thursday night; and 48 cases of beer were found in a box near Hulhumale’ Tsunami Jetty last night.

Police officers patrolling the industrial area in Hulhumale’ also arrested an expatriate last night. Police said that the man, who was at the area to the east of the Hulhumale’ Tsunami Jetty, was searched following suspicious behaviour. Two bottles of alcohol were found in his bag.

Police said at a recent press conference that cases of possession of alcohol have been on the rise in December 2014, and that more foreigners are involved in such cases than Maldivians.

About 400 bottles of alcohol have been seized during operations in December, said police.
