The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (Mifco) has said that efforts were ongoing to increase the capacity of the fish factory in Felivaru to facilitate the packaging of 50 metric tonnes of tuna per day.
Speaking at a ceremony to inaugurate a Fisheries Complex in Addu City on Sunday evening, CEO of Mifco Adhly Ismail said that it was the responsibility of Mifco to process the fish caught in the Maldives, thus, efforts were ongoing to increase the capacity of the Felivaru plant.
He did not mention the date of completion for the project.
Adhly said that President Abdulla Yameen’s policy was to export processed fish, as opposed to fresh fish, to increase the market value.
He further said that efforts were ongoing by the Fisheries Ministry and Mifco to establish ice plants in seven additional islands, and that by mid-2015, arrangements would be in place to produce and sell 120 tonnes of ice in 17 islands.
