President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has on Tuesday ratified the First Amendment Bill to the Act on Prohibiting Threatening and Possession of Dangerous Weapons and Sharp Objects that was passes by the parliament on Monday.
Following ratification, the bill has been published in the Government Gazette.
The Amendment was passed by the Parliament with 47 votes. While 17 members voted against the amendment, two members did not participate in the voting.
According to that Act, death penalty would be given for deliberate murder by using dangerous weapons or sharp objects, and if heirs of deceased forgive the criminal, lifetime imprisonment would be imposed.
