The parliament approved Abdulla Saeed as the new Chief Justice at a sitting held last night, with 55 votes in favour, and zero votes against. MPs of opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), walked out and boycotted the vote.
The President, based on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), nominated Abdulla Saeed as the new Chief Justice and sent his name to the parliament for approval yesterday.
Abdulla Saeed was appointed as Chief Justice after the parliament approved the removal of Ahmed Faiz Hussain, the chief justice until then, from his post as a judge of the Supreme Court.
