Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has said that the government has been responsible and mindful of human rights considerations while managing the water crisis faced by Malé the capital and supplying water to more than 130,000 people living in the city.
In a Statement issued today to mark World Human Rights Day, HRCM said that now is a time when people living in Malé are facing considerable hardship in securing water, one of the basic human rights. The Statement praised the government for its dedicated and comprehensive effort to supply water to the people.
“After this sudden crisis came about, the State responsible for ensuring rights, under the direction of the President himself, has acted in a praiseworthy manner and with a lot of hard work through its various institutions in supplying water to those who live in Malé”, read the Statement.
The Statement also acclaimed the government’s special arrangements to provide water for the disabled, the old, pregnant women and children, stating that the work is being done “in a very responsible manner”.
The Statement also thanked the government and the legislative body for the work of “introducing new bills in order to fully protect the rights of the people”. It called upon the People’s Majlis, the Maldivian legislative body, to pass the bills in a way that would ensure protection of human rights.
This year’s slogan for Human Rights Day is “365 Days of the Year”, signifying that each day is a human rights day.
