South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation should rediscover and restore unity among its member nations, says Dunya Maumoon, the Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Addressing the 36th Meeting of the SAARC Ministers Council, which began today at Katmandu, Nepal, Dunya referred to a time when SAARC member countries were united, and called all members to “restore those times”.
“We inherit a past during which our leaders advocated consultation in international forums on issues of common concern”, said Dunya according to the Foreign Ministry.
She highlighted the importance that SAARC leaders gave to unity in the past, and also said that the Maldives would play a key role in protecting and sustaining that unity in the future.
The Meeting of the Ministers Council is one of the key sessions that take place before the Summit of the Leaders begins. Before the Meeting of the Council of Ministers, the SAARC Standing Committee also met, as usual, in Katmandu. The Summit would begin tomorrow.
President Yameen is in Katmandu to attend the Summit.
