Thinadhoo coastal protection project inaugurated

The construction of coastal protection structures in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo has been inaugurated by Minister of Environment Thorig Ibrahim, at a ceremony in the island on Sunday.

The agreement for this project was signed with Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on 16 July.

The project will see the construction of a 950-metre coastal protection on the western side of the island. The total cost of the project, to be completed within eight months from contract award date, is MVR 35,505,453.35.

The project is funded by the Least Development Country Fund (LDCF) of Global Environment Facility (GEF) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and co-financed in-kind by the government of Maldives.

The ministry said that the purpose of the project is to demonstrate coastal protection that is sustainable, that requires the least hard engineering in design and are appropriate for preventing and controlling coastal erosion and the impact of storm surges in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
