Minister: Planned water and sewerage system projects will cost MVR 842 million

Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim has said that water and sewerage system projects worth MVR 842 million have been planned by the government, some of which have already been implemented this year.

The minister said this in response to a question by Thoddoo MP Ibrahim Hassan, at the parliament today.

“At the moment, water and sewerage system projects are ongoing in four islands. They are Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, Laamu Gan, Hithadhoo central area, and Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo,” said Thorig.

He said that sewerage projects will be implemented this year, with loans from the Opec Fund for International Development (Ofid), in Baa Thulhaadhoo, Noonu Velidhoo, Raa Hulhudhuffaaru, Gaafu Alifu Kolamaafushi, and Gaafu Alifu Gadhdhoo; while projects will be implemented next year, with loans from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), in Kaafu Himmafushi, Kaafu Thulusdhoo, Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaramfaru, Lhaviyani Naifaru, and Thaa Veymandoo.

“Out of these islands, water systems will be established in addition to sewerage systems, in Baa Thulhaadhoo, Noonu Velidhoo, Raa Hulhudhuffaaru, and Gaafu Alifu Kolamaafushi. A total of MVR 842 million will be spent on all these projects,” said Thorig.

He said that this is the highest sum spent on establishing water and sewerage systems in islands to date.
