The Council of Meemu Kolhufushi has decided to auction three temporary shelters in the island, constructed for the families that lost their homes in the tsunami in 2004.
The council said that efforts began today to sell the three shelters, which have been left behind by families that have received permanent housing, to the highest bidders.
Vice President of Kolhufushi Council Ahmed Naeem said that the starting price for all three shelters is MVR 7,000, and that the price of one shelter has already reached MVR 8,500.
Naeem said that the shelters consist of about forty 8 by 12-foot rooms, separated by 9mm and 6mm plywood; and the roof structures are made of iron pipes and angle iron.
He added that the materials used to construct the shelters are in good condition, and there is great support for the auction.
Two families that lost their homes still remain in temporary shelters. Efforts to provide housing to these two families have come to a standstill, but the council cited the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure and said that funding has been obtained to proceed with the project, and that it will be completed soon.
