MDP administrative offices opened in all inhabited islands

The ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said today that an administrative office of the party has been opened today in each inhabited island of the Maldives. The function of these administrative offices, according to MDP, would be to serve as communication bases between MDP members in the islands and party head office in Malé.

According to information released by MDP office today, administrative offices in the islands were all simultaneously opened today, at 11:30 am. With the opening of these new party-activity centres, MDP has now become the first political party in the country with administrative offices in about 200 inhabited islands of the Maldives.

There was a special inaugural function at MDP office in Malé to celebrate the opening of island administrative offices. MDP’s Interim Chairperson and Member of Parliament Moosa “Reeko” Manik spoke in the function. He said that all costs of setting up administrative offices in islands were borne by party activists and councilors in each island, and that the party did not spend any money on the project.

“These offices would connect day-to-day operations of the party activism in islands with the Head Office in Malé. We had party offices in many islands even before. However, until this day, there wasn’t much of a communication between them and party Head Office. Party activism becomes alive in islands only when the time for a campaign comes by. However, the newly opened offices would bring a difference,” Reeko said.

Reeko also said that additional efforts to increase the member base of the party would be undertaken and that these efforts would soon push the total number of MDP members to 50000.

Maldivian Democratic Party, which currently holds a majority in the People’s Majlis, and to which the current President Mohamed Nasheed belongs, was registered as the first political party in the Maldives on the 26th of June 2005. The party currently has 47301 members according to the Elections Commission, a number that gives MDP top position in terms of membership.
