Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim has said that MVR 116.3 million was allocated this year in the state budget, to addressing the problem of soil erosion in islands across the Maldives.
Thorig said this at the parliament today, in response to a question posed by Komandoo MP Ahmed Nasheed regarding the project to prevent soil erosion in the island of Komandoo.
The Environment Minister said that contracts have been signed for projects worth MVR 116.3 million to solve soil erosion in seven islands, and some of these projects have already been implemented.
The government gives high priority to solving soil erosion, and projects will be initiated in this regard every year provided that they can be financed, said Thorig.
He added that the problem of soil erosion has been reported from 114 islands, 64 of which are severely affected by this problem.
