PPM accuses MDP of influencing Supreme Court

Ruling party, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has accused Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of influencing the ongoing suo moto case against the members of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) at the Supreme Court.

In a statement issued today, PPM said that MDP works with foreign groups to discredit the Supreme Court of the Maldives.

“MDP’s efforts to dishonour various institutions of the Maldives will damage the country’s democracy. It is also harmful for the Maldivian people and will have adverse effects on tourism,” said PPM.

PPM said that its government has made numerous efforts towards consolidating and promoting democracy, and building a nation that that fully respects human rights.

The party also accused MDP of trying to damage the country’s reputation, and condemned these actions.

The Supreme Court initiated a suo moto case against the members of HRCM after HRCM stated in its recent Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report, submitted to the UN Human Rights Commission, that the judicial system of the country is controlled and influenced by the Supreme Court, weakening the judicial powers vested in other superior and lower courts.
