Second suspect arrested for helping Shahum, Fariyash hide from police

A second individual has been arrested on suspicion of helping the two convicts who escaped from Maafushi Prison hide from police.

The 20-year-old was arrested under a court warrant last night. Police said that he has a criminal record for drug crimes, issuing death threats, and vandalism.

The first suspect, a 32-year-old, was arrested yesterday.

Police held a press briefing last night to provide information on their operations to find and arrest Ibrahim Shahum and Fariyash Ahmed, whose escape from Maafushi Prison was discovered on 17 October.

Head of Central Operations Command, Chief Superintendent of Police Ismail Naveen said during the press briefing that the two convicts had planned their escape for a long time.

Head of Serious and Organised Crime Department, Chief Inspector of Police Abdulla Shatheeh said that everyone who aided the two convicts in their escape and in their efforts to hide from the police, will be found and investigated.

The two cases, regarding the escape of the prisoners and helping them hide form the police, are under investigation by the Serious and Organised Crime Department of the Maldives Police Service.
