Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim has said that clean drinking water service will be provided to all islands in Addu City in 2016.
Responding to a question posed by Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef at the parliament sitting held this morning, Thorig said that all equipment necessary to establish the water system in Addu City have arrived in the city.
“Pipes have been laid in Hithadhoo, Addu City; and efforts are now underway to connect the pipes and install the metres. Metres have also been installed in 900 houses, and about 600 remain to be completed. This work is being carried out by Fenaka,” said Thorig.
He said that UK company Bywater was commissioned to carry out this project in 2010, but the company stopped the work after completing only 30 percent.
Thorig further mentioned that efforts to establish water systems are ongoing in seven islands across the country, which will all be completed early next year - facilitating clean water for 13,600 people.
