Minister of State for Finance Mohamed Ashmalee has said that Community E-Centres (CEC), providing free internet, will be established in 50 islands before the end of the year.
Ashmalee said this while speaking to reporters at the Third South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Implementing Agency meeting held at Traders Hotel this morning.
“Our target is to commence services at 50 Community E-Centres before December. The final date is 31 December. By then, the service will be available in all islands,” said Ashmalee.
He said that the purpose of this project is to create opportunities for students and other people in the islands.
He added that in addition to conducting awareness programs, the CECs will also facilitate trade-related opportunities.
He said that CECs are available already in 45 islands, and they will be established in the five remaining islands over the next month.
