Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer has called to investigate the issue of Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) issuing a report regarding the missing journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
Speaking in a local channel, DhiTV program last night, the minister said that police are facing lot of obstacles in investigating the case of the missing journalist due to the report made by MDN. For this reason the minister has now requested the registrar of associations to investigate this matter.
“Because MDN has imposed serious obstructions to the investigation of the missing journalist, I have sent a request to the registrar of associations to investigate it. So Home Ministry will start the investigation very soon,” said the minister.
He said that MDN would be penalized if found guilty.
“If they are found to be guilty after the investigation, they will be punished accordingly. We will not hesitate to take action just because their name includes ‘democracy’,” he said.
The minister said that Rilwan’s family members are also at risk due to the report made by MDN and police is undertaking the required steps to address those problems.
Minister Umar said that the power of investigating is given to specific authorities, and that the report made by MDN was based on rumors.
