Hamid Hussain, of Aazaadheege, Lhaviyani Naifaru, has been sentenced to one month in prison for contempt of court.
The Family Court gave this sentence in relation to Hamid’s conduct within the premises of the court, after the court ruled against him in a divorce case.
The court said in its verdict that Hamid and his wife were summoned to the court at 12:50 p.m. on 18 September 2014, but Hamid entered the court at around 10:30 a.m. and spoke angrily and disrespectfully, before throwing his copy of the verdict report at the court staff.
The court said that Hamid then left the building, but returned about five minutes later and said that he would not appear in court ‘unless handcuffed’.
The Family Court has said that Hamid’s prison time will be counted from the day that he is taken to prison, and ordered Maldives Correctional Services to take action to execute this sentence.
